Things to do in Nairobi

Hopefully all of us will get to spend some time in Nairobi, whether when we arrive or when we leave, even if its just for a day. Therefore I took the liberty of looking up some of the things to do in Nairobi. If people have a preference about going to any of the following, then just say and we'll try to plan it into our schedule:

Karen Blixen Museum - originally the home of Karen Blixen, who came to Kenya from Denmark in the early part of this century and wrote several books on Kenya. It costs 200 Kshs for non residents.

The Giraffe Centre - an opportunity to come into close contact with, and feed the world's tallest animal, the Giraffe. Admission is KSh 250.

Nairobi National Park - Only a few kilometres from the city centre, this is the most accessible of Kenya's game parks.

David Sheldrick Animal Trust - The sanctuary is home to orphaned elephants and Rhino and was established following the death of David Sheldrick in 1977. The trust is opened to the public from 11am to 12pm.

Kenyan National Museum - costs only 200 ksh. An introduction to Kenya and an escape from Nairobi. The museum's cool, peaceful interiors will give relief from the hot dusty streets outside. As you walk quietly around, you'll see displays of fossils, tribal artefacts, and a bird gallery with more than 900 stuffed and mounted specimens.

The Bomas of Kenya - cultural center that regularly hosts traditional song and dance performances. Admission is KSh 300.

The Blue Market - In Nairobi, do your shopping at the 'Blue Market'. It's a big explanade of huts in the open air, just in front of the highly touristic 'Covered Market', in Muindi Mbingu Street. If you dare to go into the labyrinth of tiny streets (do it, it's safe enough) you can bargain for any kind of souvenir.

Nairobi Arboretum - The grounds are covered with hundreds of colorful flowers, as well as more than 300 species of trees. Free admission.
